Could someone please help us with this question:

Sally has a best throw of 11.6m. Her improvement is one-third of her worst throw. What was her worst throw?

Many thanks

presumably divide that by 4 and times it by 3, ie 3/4 of 11.6 which is, er, 8.7.

Thank you for your prompt response Milla, but we still don't get how you got the answer :oops:

Assume x is the worst throw.

Then x + (1/3)x = 11.6

(4/3)x=11.6
x=8.7

For children I draw these in boxes. Worst throw is a rectangle cut into three pieces. We know that one of these pieces needs to be added to this rectangle to get the best throw of 11.6. So the longer rectangle is 11.6 long and has 4 even pieces. 11.6 divided by 4 = 2.9.
2.9 can now be written in each box. Worst throw only needed the three original boxes so 2.9 times 3.

Hope this helps, it works with lots of the backwards fraction/percentage questions.
