I am just trying to work out what level of division is required for 11+

DD is quite good and quick with short division but struggles with long division and am not sure if she needs to know long division at this level

I am using the ae tuition workbook which goes to KS3 so I dont want to overload her.

For example 4893 divided by 3. Is she expected to give the answer as 1631 r2 or is she expected to give it as 1631.7

The Essex maths exam requires answers using decimal places. I made sure DS could do long division before taking the exam. The old fashioned way. I can't be doing with the gridding/chunking done in the name of multiplication and division.

Milla I am afraid but your answer is wrong. 1632 would be correct one

I think I will teach her the decimal places. I actually hit the bump when trying to do decimal place division and she was writing a remainder.

I am doing it the old fashioned way too and sometimes when she covers the stuff in class she comes showing me the new way and I just tell her to use what she is comfortable with. Mum wins most times

sherry_d, surely Milla is right, 4893/3=1631, no decimals... you can check on a calculator

phew! I did it in my head as it was easy to "see" 3 into 4 goes one remainder 1, 3 into 18 etc.

No chance, either way, at our school, am sure they still do that weird chunking stuff.
