Taken from Habs 2010

Four friends a b c and d have lunch together.

Although each eats a differently priced snack, they share the bill equally.

Yesterday this resulted in A paying £1 less than the cost of his snack, B paying £3 more, C £4 less and D paid £4

What was the actual price of the snack that each friend ordered.

Answers really welcome...

Many thanks in advance

Doesn't quite work - if D pays £4 (which must be the price of his snack and the mean of the prices) - how come C's snack was £6 and he paid £4 less which would have been £2 not the £4 he paid..

have we got all the info here?

agreed total should be £16

Unless I've had a glass of vino too many, this just cannot work can it?

We know that they all paid £4 because D paid £4 and they shared the bill equally, but as Herman says, it doesn't work.

D paid £4, and the question says they all paid £4.

So A 's snack cost £5 - as they paid £1 less than the cost of the snack

B's snack cost £1, as they paid £3 more than the cost of the snack

C's snack cost £8, as they paid £4 less than the cost of the snack

Total bill was 4 lots of £4 which is £16. So D's snack cost £16 - £5 - £1 - £8 -------- which is £2.

Thank you Mystery!!

Solved - though bit of an odd question.

Think KC and I will stick to the vino..... until the next puzzle anyway!
