Re: Help with some Maths Questions from Manchester Grammar s
Hmm. I agree with the car journey one but not with this one.yoyo123 wrote:did neil spend the same as the first 4 put together?
if so
call the amount jim , john and nick spent each £a
so Paul spends 3a
neil spends 3a +3a = 6a
96/6 = 16 so Jim spent £16 ( I think!)
I'm with you in that Jim, John and Nick spend a each and Paul spends 3a. If Neil spends the same as the first 4 put together then that is, indeed, 6a.
Therefore, the total spent by all 5 is a+a+a+3a+6a=12a
Therefore, 12a=96 and a=8.
Jim spent £8.
Re: Help with some Maths Questions from Manchester Grammar s
I get a different answer
Neil spent half of £96= £48
Paul spent half of this amount therefore he spent £24
leaving £24 between Jim John and Nick which makes £8 each
therefore I get an answer of £8 for Jim
Neil spent half of £96= £48
Paul spent half of this amount therefore he spent £24
leaving £24 between Jim John and Nick which makes £8 each
therefore I get an answer of £8 for Jim

Thank you all for your help..I have another one to unravel....
Christopher gives half of hios marbles to one son, Ian, and one-sixth of them to his other son, Stuart . Ian gets 40 more marbles than Staurt. How many marbles did Christopher have at the start?

Help again please...
A sheet of papaer has length 8 centimetres and width 6 centimetres. Godfrey cuts out four squares, whose sides are 2 centimetres long, from each of the corners of this sheet of papaer. what is the Perimeter of the remaining shape?

Re: Help with some Maths Questions from Manchester Grammar s
that last one definitely needs a diagram, draw it out and it will be easier to solve..

Think there shouldn't be any change in the perimeter as long as you are cutting out rectangles (squares) from the corners.

Ian's marbles = 1/2 = 3/6 = x+403Boysbarnetmum wrote:Thank you all for your help..I have another one to unravel....

Stuart's marbles = 1/6 = x
Remaining marbles = 2/6 =2x
The sum of Stuart's and the remaining marbles = Ian's marbles
Therefore : 3x = x+40
3x - x=40
2x = 40
x=20
The number of marbles at the start = 6x =6*20=120
Re: Help with some Maths Questions from Manchester Grammar s
for the petrol question:
if 70% will take you 560km then:
70% of A = 560km.............. where A represents how many km the full tank will take you
therefore
70/100 x A = 560km
0.7A=560.......A=800km (this is your 100%)
then you do 800-560=240km will be how much remainder of petrol can do
hope that helps

Re: Help with some Maths Questions from Manchester Grammar s
for the perimeter question..it is definatly easier if you draw it out....
if u draw exactly what it says you end up with a cross and just add all the sides...
