Maths puzzle books

My 7 year old is in the top set for maths and has no problems when a sum is laid out for him, but he doesn't have the confidence to tackle maths word problems and I'd like to help him with that. Can anyone recommend a book on maths word problems, the type where maths/ logic is used to solve the problem but the child first has to work out what the problem is?

You could try the Scholfield & Sims maths problem solving book 1, available on this site and I particularly like the WH Smith's Practice Problem Solving KS2 (age 7-9 would probably be the best starting point).

For some reason contrary DS doesn't like it if I print out worksheets I find on the internet - I think it looks too much like homework for him - but sees workbooks, especially if there are stickers, as fun puzzles.

Try Maths PLus from Heinemann Word problem they are brilliant! I had the same problem with my DS now he loves problem solving.
I did Schofield mental maths,a bit of schofield problem solving and Heinemann with him and they worked like magic.

I really liked these investigative puzzles produced for teachers.

The NRich website is good fun too. Run by the university of Cambridge.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I've ordered these books and also New Framework Maths word problems. Together they should keep DS amused, and hopefully boost his confidence.
