Essex 11+ 2008 Maths Q21.
Am I missing something obvious here? Are the children expected to know 1cu.m = 1000 litres in order to answer the question? I'd be grateful for comments.

I'm not sure that prior knowledge is necessary. Most children can extrapolate from the question that it must be out of 1000.

I am guessing that it is approximately this question with a tank of water that holds 1 cubic metre when full and that 250 litres have been used - how many litres does that leave?

I do not have the paper to hand, so if you type up the question then it will be easier for other forum members to answer.

" The oil tank attached to Sanjay's house is in the shape of a metre cube. The oil company delivers 850 litres of oil into the empty tank.
What is the height of the oil in the tank?"

Diagram shows tank 1m x 1m x "height of oil"

Answer ..........cm
