Hello all I'm new to the forum my DS came across the following questions in the MGS 2008 Maths paper

Q38 In a certain year March 1st fell on Saturday. What was the next month which started on a saturday? answer is November

I tried helping my DS using a calendar but could not work this out, is there a technique or a known method in dealing with this type of question.

Q40 2 oranges and 3 lemons cost 64 pence. 3 oranges and 4 lemons cost 89 pence. What is the cost of an orange? Answer is 11p

Again, I tried helping my DS with this, to work out the unit cost but no joy, if any one could help it would be greatly appreciated

Regards franticdad

I'll have a bash at oranges and lemons.... trick is to get both lots of oranges to the same quantity ie 6 oranges - so:

6 orange + 9 L = 192
6 orange + 8 L = 178

one lemon = 14 p
so 6 oranges = 178- (8*14) = 178 - 112 = 66 -
so one orange = 11p.

Re. Q38

The next Saturday must be a multiple of 7 days later. So March has 31 days - not divisible by 7, so add Aprils 30 days - 61 still not divisible by 7 and so on. You need to keep adding the months until you get a number divisible by 7.

31+30+31+30+31+31+30+31 = 245/7 =35
M A M J J A S O

the next 1st of a month on a saturday is 1st November
