The question's not at all clear (as given) then, is it, because you've interpreted it as half the journey by distance (which leads to a not impossible, but awkward for the average 11 year, problem), and pretty much everyone else on this thread has interpreted it as half the journey by time!

My DD looked at it and said 10km ,she said she just divide both by four since both journey took 1/4 of an hour,then add both answers .

I'm a Maths teacher and the question is not able to be solved as it is ambiguous ... see what I said on page 1.
