"Malcolm went abroad for 43 days from September 3rd to October 15th."

Answer says it's correct, but it is 42 days surely?

Not if you include both 3rd September and 15th October:

3-30th September =28days
1-15th October = 15days

Total 43days.

Do you include it though? Like three days from Monday would be Thursday isn't it, not Wednesday.

Presumably though he went on the 3rd and returned on the 15th, so you would include those days.

You would have to include both the dates - if you booked your annual leave I think you'd have to count them !

It is a very ambiguous question.
In the Uk, we would count it as 42 days.

In Asia, they would count it as 43 (as I learnt when renting an apartment!)

Was this a multiple choice question?
If so, I think it would have been awful if two of the options were 42 and 43.
However, I think there would have to be some leniency as like I said at the start, it
is an ambiguous unfair question. I would be very surprised if something like this
came up in the exam.

Hi Elizabeth, interested why you say it would be 42 days in the UK. I automatically worked to 43 'cos as somebody said if you booked annual leave to cover the holiday you would need to book 43.

Not picking an argument (honest) just interested.

No, it is from Athey Test Pack 5 (standard format) Paper 1. Question number 29. Place a [tick] in the box if the statement is correct and a [cross] if it is not correct.

Because, if you are going on holiday, you generally go for example from Saturday to Saturday (or whatever day) and tell people you are going for a week. And a week is seven days. Or a fortnight (14 days) even though the amount of time covered is 15 days.
