Good evening,

You would need to substract £3.60 from £12 - which leaves you with £8.40
Then divide £8.40 by 2 = £4.20

One of the amount is £4.20
The other amount is £4.20 + £3.60 = £7.80

Option 1: Hit n trial
Pros - you will get the answer eventually
Cons - it may take lot of tries and may eat up precious time

Option 2: Algebra (my recommendation)
Pros - you will get the answer in couple of steps for even complicated equations
Cons - you need to be versed with simultaneous equations

x + y = 12
x - y = 3.60 (do addition of equations)
-------------------
2x + 0 = 15.60
x = 15.60/2 = 7.80
y = 12-7.80 =4.20

FYI - this is a very simple scenario. I have seen examples in private papers where one has to multiply equation 1 by a number and equation 2 by another number before solving.
