Adding Fractions Question

Hi

Can anyone please explain the method of working out the question below and the answer please.

5/12 + 1/2 = ?

The old faithful bbc bitesize will help your dc:

There are different pages for different key stages, scrolling through this one seems quite good, but have a look at others too.

It is important they are adept st equivalent fractions, and understand the concept before trying to add, subtract or order fractions. There are some games for equivalent fractions on ks2 bitesize maths too.

A pizza or cake cut into 12 equal slices might help them understand that 1/2 = 6/12.

Its then just a case of adding 5 pizza slices to 6 pizza slices...
