Bens father was 33 when Ben was born. 8 years ago Bens father was twice as old as Ben is now. How old is Ben?

How do I explain this to a 10 year old, assuming he is not ready for simultaneous equations?

Also, worth mentioning to your child that if he comes across something so complex and time-consuming in exam, consider missing the question and coming back to it later if he has the time. Some marks are much easier to obtain than others.

Thanks for the link, DS seems determined to half the answer after deducting the 8 so ends up with 12.5!

I totally agree re certain question types being best left. When his sister sat her 11 plus a few years ago she could not do type 15 VR,the logic questions, so was instructed to immediately mark C and move on!

It's a good thing that you're attempting questions like this at this early stage. We were doing questions like this in the 2 months before - dd was struggling and we didn't have the luxury of spending time on these. The positive think is she passed despite struggling with questions like this.

Yes, we do have 13 months to go as only aiming at local indi not grammar level, but I wasn't expecting this in a level 4 sats maths book.
