Question explanations please?

Hi

Would be grateful is anyone can help with how to get to the answer in either question below please.

1) There are 816 pupils at Southfields school.
There are 28 more girls than boys in the school.
How many girls are there in the school?

The answer is 422.

2) In short this question is asking to work out the mean of 24 over 5 days. The answer sheet States that the answer is 4.8 but dd is unsure how to work this out. She did 24 divided by 5 to get the 4 but as her remainder was 4 she rounded the answer up to the nearest answer on the sheet (multiple choice) which was 4.5.

Thanks in advance.

If the numbers were equal there would be 816/2 = 408 so can you see how to get two numbers 28 apart from this?
2) In short this question is asking to work out the mean of 24 over 5 days.
24/5 = 4 remainder 4

We are dividing by 5 so that remainder is 4/5 which has been expressed as a decimal.

816 - 28 = 788
788/2 = 394
394+ 28 = 422

Thank you both for the prompt responses.

Have shown Dd both ways for the first question and gone through the second answer too.
These make sence now, thanks again.

How do they teach division at your DD's school? DS has just started year 8 so things may have changed in the interim, but he says that he was taught the 'fraction' and 'decimal' methods of dealing with remainders in year 2.

Dd2 hasn't been taught those methods, they have only covered dividing with a reminder of a whole number eg. 5 r2. She has just stared in y6, more worrying is that dd1 who has just started year 7 said she hasn't been taught the division method using fractions and decimals as the reminder either :/ Just re read your post & saw your DS was taught it in year 2; Dd3 has just started in year 3 but goes up to the year above her for maths & also hasn't been taught this. Am rather concerned.

It should come up in Year 5 according to the NC. I would say Year 2 is too early for the vast majority of children ...

Is this a particular quirk of your school, do you think, or an overall policy in the LEA? I would envisage even our poorer local secondaries having something to say about it if they found that none of the kids moving up to them had been taught anything more than very basic skills in division at primary school.

Tbh I'm really not sure. DD1 achieved 5B in maths at the end of year 6 so I'd have hoped based on that her knowledge was more than average, however I am now panicking a tad that she may struggle. Unfortunately, maths is not a strong point of mine :/

Its worth remembering that dividing by 5 is the same as multiplying by 2 and then dividing by 10.

i.e. 24 / 5 = 24 x 2 / 10 = 48 / 10 = 4.8

Hopefully they should be OK dividing by 10 to give the answer as a decimal even if they struggle with dividing by other numbers.
