Is there a formula or a quick way of solving this question or is the only way trying to exhaust all the possibilities? If the latter is the case, I counted 25 different ways, but This way is definitely time consuming and likely to get muddled up or accidentaly miscalculate or count sth twice.

There is a formula but I don't think it's appropriate for 11+.

Think systematically - he will have to go three N and three E to get there.

Start with N or E

NNN EEE [only route with three N in a row]

NNE NEE
NNE ENE
NNE EEN
etc once you've done all these then you'll need to double it.

Thank you! That's definitely a more organised way than drawing. It end up with the result:20. Is it the same for anyone else?
No idea how I got 25 before!!!
