Post by QUEENMA »

Stumbled upon this question in a 11 plus test book ( IPS )

Paddy is playing with a complete deck of cards - he has 52 cards.

Paddy picks up seven cards.
What is the probability that one of the cards is spade ?

Answer given is 7/208

Not well worded - does it mean exactly one or at least one?

Also not a suitable 11+ question whichever they mean.

Technically it is also 'without replacement' as it talks about picking up 7 cards ... more like an A level question or written by someone who does not understand probability.

Probability of picking a spade =13/52
Probability of picking 7 cards out of 52= 7/52

Probability of picking a spade will be after picking 7 cards from 52 card deck=(13/52)*(7/52)
=7/208
