Agree with you Guest55. Comparison of denominators is fool proof and allows multiple fractions to be compared.

What they are actually doing here is using some of the techniques from dividing fractions but not explaining it in those terms. "Look at my magic trick to check equivalence" is pretty much what they are saying.
Dividing one fraction by the other and getting the answer 1 (or 156/156 in their example) to prove equivalence is a nice idea but I agree, far more complicated that finding common denominators.
