My son mostly solves in mind and doesnt show the working out. Does he need to show working out in standard format papers?

Is this for a state school, or an independent? For state schools it is usually a question of 'you may use (this) space to do your working out'; for indies you may get 'method' marks even if you put the wrong answer, I think

Best thing would be to look at a part paper for the school in question, to see what the instructions are?
