Maths problem

Post by KK »

Hello
can anyone help please with maths question 48, from Maths familiarization test 11c NFER
What is the formula for the area of a hexagon with side y and x.
How does one approach this? Find area of a triangle, or area of trapezium?
Or is it simpler than that?
Many thanks for any help.

Hi KK

I think the question has a side of x and a perpendicular height of y

I would suggest using the formula for a triangle

1/2 height x base

1/2 x y x x

Then multiply by 6

to give

3 x y x x

or

3yx

Normally written as 3xy

Mike that is right up to a point. But when you multiply 1/2xy by 6 you get 3xy. There should be no addition involved.

Thank you mike and guest,
The clue was in x is the perpendicular height, and as mike has pointed out the area of the triangle is 1/2 base x height.
1/2 x Y x X= 1/2YX
The hexagon can be divided into 6 triangles, giving
= 1/2YX
= (1/2YX)6
=3YX or 3XY

Just pipped atthe post I see

exactly area =1/2 (xy) fpr each triangle, there are 6 so 3(xy)
