IPS Maths Book D Paper 3, question 27
Hi,
Can anyone please help?
The question is :
Mrs Davison buys a map of Ireland. It is drawn to the scale of 1 : 500, 000.
What distance , in kilometres is represented by 1cm on the map.
A = 5km. B = 500km, C = 50km, D = 5000 km, E = 500,000 m.
The book says the answer is B.
But :
Scales mean that 1 unit is represented by 500,000 units in this example. Hence 1 cm on the map is 500,000cm on the land. So 100 cm=1m, 1000 m = 1km meaning 100, 000 cm = 1 Km. So surely the answer is A : 5Km.
Any comments? Thanks in Advance?

You seem to be right. Indeed, if the correct answer was B, then e is correct also.za1 wrote:Hi,
