Maths question

Post by WFW1112 »

We are a bit confused with following question:

The postman delivers letters to the same house every other day. The paperboy delivers a weekly paper to the house. Starting from day one. how many times will the house receive a letter and a paper on the same day in one year?

The correct answer is 25, but ours is 27, could anybody give us any help?
Thanks in advance.

I get 27 as well

Lowest Common Multiple is 14.

26 X 14 = 364 (days)

Meet therefore on first and last but one day of year.

27 Meetings altogether.

We did exactly the same. Perhaps the answer is wrong?

This is the one question in Tutors Maths CD1 section 18 ( Miscellaneous) No 30 question.

'Starting from day one' may not mean the first delivery is THAT day - letters may be delivered on day 2,4,6, etc .

The only answers I can come up with are 27 (if postman and paperboy both deliver on day 1) or 26 (any other combination).

They have to deliver on the same day once a fortnight and this has to happen at least 26 times as there are 26 fortnights in a year.

Or have I missed something? :?

I could only put it down to the postman not delivering on Sundays.

Hi WFW112

We have had a look at the question and the correct answer should be "E", 27. The change should be made within the next few days and anyone who has purchased a CD or download can obtain a revised version. Thanks for drawing this to our attention.

Regards
