Can someone clarify how to define a multiple pls. I thought it was the name given to the whole numbers that can divide into a given number.
ie the multiples of 12 are 1,2,3,4,6 and 12.

Whilst trawling round the net, I've found a fun maths site that suggests it's the name given to the number being divided into, therefore in the above example it would be 12.

Yet when looking up Multiples, again on the net, it says that the numbers that result from multiplying a given number by the set of whole numbers (eg, the multiples of 15 are 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, etc.)

Totally flumoxed

Any Help appreciated.

Hi guest,

Multiples of a number are the numbers that you get when you multiply this number. For example multiples of 3 are
3 (3*1)
6 (3*2)
9 (3*3) etc..

What you are looking at in your example are factors.
1,2,3,4,6 and 12 are the factors of 12. You can divide 12 by these numbers and get a whole number.

Hope this helps
