Maths question - urgent help required
Hello all,
My Ds doesn't understand how to go about solving the following maths question, we have tried to explain it to him but we don't seem to be doing a good job as he still doesn't understand!!
I wonder if someone could explain the process of how to solve it and the perhaps the logic behind it please?
the question is as follows:
Given that 732986 / 967 = 758 what is 732.986 / 96.7
This particular question does have verious connotations to it howver if we can get him to uinderstand the basic principle then I think he will be able to approach the others!
I appreciate this may be an easy one however I just don't think we are explaining it as clearly as we should be!!
Thanks in advance for your help
Kind Regards
Coolmum

The difficult thing with these sorts of problem is knowing when to divide and when to multiply.
You could say
and carefully justify each step.
It may also help to do an estimated answer (e.g. 700 / 100 = 7) and check that your computed answer is in the same ballpark.
You could say
Code: Select all
732986 967 732986 x 10 758
732.986 / 96.7 = ------ / --- = ----------- = --- = 7.58
1000 10 1000 x 967 100
It may also help to do an estimated answer (e.g. 700 / 100 = 7) and check that your computed answer is in the same ballpark.
Given that 732986 / 967 = 758 what is 732.986 / 96.7
I would explore other questions to see if he knows what this is asking!
If 732986 / 967 = 758 what is 7329860 / 967?
Answer 7580 as the top number is ten times bigger so the answer will be 10 times bigger ...
Build it up step by step - he needs to understands that when we divide by a smaller number there will be more.
Get him to 'play' around making questions with the same answer.
Please don't talk about moving decimal points focus on multiplying or dividing by 10.

In a few years time I guess they will expect the kids to work thru the questions , have an interview, group discussion , oral discussion and roleplay. they answer the questions verbally, they mark as they do the paper[/u][/i]
