Northern Ireland exam confusion.

Post by annie1234 »

Hello folks

Please can someone advise me? I am the sister of a P.6 pupil who will be sitting what was formally the 11+ in November. As far as I am aware this is the first year without the actual 11+ exam. My mother has been told that the schools are not to provide any formal teaching in relation to the new exam this year. Apparently this has come from the eduaction authority for Northern Ireland. To make up for this the students have been given masses of extra weekend homework to make up for what they are missing out on in school. The parents are going crazy as they feel the children should be given the same treatment if they had been sitting the actual 11+ exam. Some schools are saying their hands are tied while other have been giving the pupils past papers etc. even though they are not supposed to.

Can anyone shed some light on this please? I do not live in N.I more so getting home at the minute to do some digging myself is not possible.

My mother is not fully up to date with the whole exam process, nor am I so any help would be great!

Also where can I get past papers on line that will represent the exams the children will be taking in 2009. Its no longer the 11+ but all information I have found is still refering to the exam as the 11+.

Thank you.

Hi
I suggest that you look at this site for starters:-

http://www.aqe.org.uk/

If you do not get any help there look at the website of the school that your sister/brother may be applying for and they should have details regards entrance requirements etc.
The exam will almost certainly consist of English and maths questions but there will not be any science questions.
Hope this is of some use.

Hi Stephen

Thank you for getting back to me. The school my sister has choosen is not on this list. It's either going to be St Patricks Acadmey or Donnaghmore Convent (both catholic grammers). Do you know if there is a similar site for these schools?

Would I be right that the grammer schools now have their own specific exams i.e the acadmey and convent may have different exams however for the same purpose?

I think the best thing to do is call one of them!

Thanks again for you reply!

Annie.

The government-run test has been abolished, but the schools have formed two consortia to run their own tests, one locally produced, the other NFER. At least one grammar school plans to go partially selective, but I don't know which one that is.
