My daughter is going into year 5 in september. i would really love for her to go stretford grammar where most of her friends wil go. She is struggling academically(mainly maths), but i believe she can progress with support. does anyone know whether stretford grammar take children from out of borough? what the 11+ exam entails? and can recommend a good tutor? i am willing to do what it takes to support her and get her in?

any replies much appreciated

thx

Have a look at Trafford Councils website where they list the eligibility criteria for every school in the borough. Note, these can change but it is not very frequent that it happens.

The criteria will generally state who gets in first. As Stretford is on the edge of the council they do take children from outside the Local Authority.

If you do a google search you can find a list of tutors in the area, which you can compare with friends. High street bookstores have a range of self help books to assist with the exam preparation.

Depending on where you live, there are other Grammar schools in the borough. All have distance soemwhere in the entrance criteria.

Hi there, and welcome to the forum. With a year to go until the exams you have given yourself plenty of time to understand the system.

Stretford takes pupils on a distance from school basis (as the crow flies). It makes no difference if you live outside Trafford. I believe a large proportion of SGS's pupils come from Salford, for example. Kids in Salford are closer to the school than kids in Altrincham, say, and the Altrincham kids would not get priority just because they are in Trafford. That said, whilst I don't know how far out SGS goes each year (maybe a question you could ring the school and ask once term starts?) I do know that it takes at least a few kids from the Altrincham area each year, so I suspect you are looking at 6 miles or so at least.

In terms of tutors, we can't recommend tutors on this site, but I second GMan's suggestion of asking around at school. That aside, the preparation materials you can buy in bookshops or online off this site are very helpful if you want to go it alone at home. In terms of Maths, be aware that although the schools state that KS2 maths is sufficient, bear in mind the fact that at the time of the exam your daughter will only have covered 3/4 of the KS2 syllabus and the exam may well cover the whole syllabus. Looking at the GL example papers will give you some idea of what is usually covered so you can assess any gaps.

Good luck!

hi, & thanx for yr in depth response. i would like to be as prepared as i can for my daughter and would prefer to go it alone rather than a tutor, but at the same time 'needs must', with only a year to squeeze it all in. I wonder if you could just abbreviate on the 'GL' example papers, im not very up to date with these. Are there any good preparatory papers especially for maths (weakest area) that you can recommend?

much appreciated :)
