Hi,
I have 1 son at Alty Boys (Year 9) and another son at St. Ambrose (Year 7). They are both really good schools, but depends on your sons interests and subject preferences. Alty Boys I would say is probably a little more academic, but has subject specialisms in Languages and Science, which really does suit my older son. They also have good sports facilities and play both football and rugby.

St. Ambrose only play inter form football and are very much a rugby school if that matters to your son. However, they are Maths and ICT specialism and much of the work is done on netbooks and really suits my younger son. It is a Catholic College and whilst we are not Catholic, I must say there is a real commuity spirit and caring aspect to this school which is evident from the beginning. I would also say they are very strict with uniform checks each morning. This school is also having an amazing new build due to open in 2012, with fanastic facilities including 50 m swimming pool etc.

Both my sons are happy, are working hard and we can't fault either school. I don't have experience of the other schools, but I am sure whichever school he chooses he will do well. They are all good schools but I'm sure friendships and interests can play an important part too.

Hello and welcome.

I am not quite sure what you are asking advice on. I understand that your son has passed the entrance exam for each of the schools mentioned. Are you asking what order you should put them on your CAF?

Each of the schools has different criteria under which it will allot places at the school. Looking at each of these you should be able to work out whether your son has a good chance of gaining entry. Another factor to consider is travel. Are there buses/trains that would take your son close to the schools? What time would he be leaving home and arriving back in the evening? Do you prefer a single sex school or mixed?

Did you visit the schools? Do you have a feel for which one would suit your son the best? Is his strength in languages/maths/science/arts? Answering all these questions and then applying the answers to each school in turn should help you come to a conclusion. Just because a reader here has a son at St Ambrose or Stretford and loves it doesn't mean that it's the right school for your son because he will have his own needs/preferences to take into account.

Once you have made some decisions then you need to fill in your CAF in the order of preference. So, if Alty Boys is your No 1 choice then it should be No 1 etc

I would advise you to put at least one local comprehensive school on your CAF at which your son is assured a place just in case you don't get allotted one of the grammars. Better to have a place at a school you are relatively happy with than a place at a school you did not put on your CAF and wouldn't send him to at all.

Thanx - comments are much appreciated - We are not in the catchment area - My preferences would be AGSB Boys or Saint Ambrose easy bus route from Parrswood . Sale and Stretford are much more difficult to get to . In a dilemma because he achieved 351 for AGBS and last years scores were 355 but 349 in 2009 not sure if this is a high enough score for an offer. Saint Ambrose pass mark was 315 and he achieved 370 ( we are not catholic). However he scored 40 plus points about the Sale and Stretford marks .

Hoping the scores are high enough to offer an out of catchment place at the schools
