Is there a later exam a child could retry if he/she missed the pass mark by a few marks?

I don't have any experience of it but there are 'in year' entrance tests that can be sat, once the school year has started. I know of a boy transferring from Wellington to my DS grammar. I guess it would depend not only on a pass but on their being a space at the school.

Yes but as I understand it, you have to wait at least 12 months from not qualifying before you can apply 'in year' (certainly for AGSB). Have a read through the admissions policies for the schools.
