Help with a compound word question?

There was a really odd compound question on one of the Bright Sparks papers.

My daughter marked 'log' and 'in' to make login but the answer was 'leg' and 'end' to make legend.

Surely they are both correct? Although I know 'login' can be a bit ambiguous, it is a word.

Just hoping the actual test does not have questions like this and wonder if anyone can shed any light on this?

Login isn't one word, it's two, which is why legend is correct and login isn't.

Maybe when some older papers were written login wasn't a word - but I'd argue that it is now - e.g. from http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/login?s=t
login [n. lawg-in, log-; v. lawg-in, log-]
1. the act of logging in to a database, device, or computer, especially a multiuser computer or a remote or networked computer system.
2. a person's username and password that allows them to log in to a computer system, network, device, or user account.

The problem with login is that I suspect it's a colloquialism and I don't think the 11+ uses them.

Oxford Dictionaries recognise it too: http://oxforddictionaries.com/definitio ... in?q=login

Is there a date on that paper to give an indication how long ago it might have been written?

SD's Bright Sparks papers certainly date back as far as 2005, but I think I recall them being available even before that.

I agree that "login" has become a compound word since then, so this is just a case of the language evolving while the papers don't keep up. It wouldn't occur on the real papers though.

But if it is, it's one with a near-fifty year history: http://goo.gl/QA81t" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
