OH Boy 11+ appeal Wirral!

Post by mammy1 »

Can't quite believe we're in this position! 11+ results paper 1 =119, paper 2 =111, pass mark 236 therefore a shortfall of 6, it has devastated all of us! So, we will appeal to Calday GS, levels predicted end of year 6 are, Math 5a, Reading 5b and Writing 5b. Headmaster will support.I have one child already in the school, my son has attended many of Caldays workshops from year 3 upwards by invitation from the schools centre for gifted children (will this help)? He is at a very high standard at a particular sport ( national level), would that help? Any advice please? Anyone been through this on the Wirral? Anything?
Gutted!!
Also I now hear that all GS on the Wirral are going to be oversubscribed, can anyone shed any light over this?

Hi Tyra,
I'm also worried! Source is questionable- word of mouth, also somebody posted on here, 802 passes 408 boys 394 girls???
I have emailed the "hotdesk" 2 days ago but no reply yet.

Okay now let's think about this logically! That number will not take into account Upton and St Anselms so some that have passed both may want the catholic option! Plus you
will have ones that don't take up places for one reason or another! Think your wasting your time emailing Hot Desk, I couldn't even get a decent reply when I spoke to them, so unhelpful! I wonder if this year is a high birth rate year!! :?

Hi Tyra,
Everyone including our headmaster has said it's a low birth rate year.
I guess there's enough to worry about, lets not concern ourselves with this unless it becomes a fact!
The post I read with this info on passes is on this site and was posted by Benville, read it for yourself Tyra :? .

The birthrate nationally is higher this year than it was last year but will peak next year (ie for kids entering secondary in 2015).

For a general summary have a look at this
Or for more localised figures you could try this one (it's the Mid-2012-unformatted-syoa-data-file you want) which would give you the estimated number of people of each age and sex for each local authority area as at the middle of 2012 (which is probably closer to school year cohorts than the by year of birth data is) and gives you a fairly good idea of the age profile in your area.

For example the data for Wirral - year of birth (mid year figures, so close to school cohorts) - 2002/3 (approximately the current Year 6 cohort) is actually almost the same as the year before for the Wirral area.

Thankyou very much Okanagan for that good information! Am not to sure as my DD is January 03 birthday, then I presume she would come under the 2002/03 year! Which seems to be quite a low birth rate year compared to all the others!! Which gives me hope that the grammar schools will not be oversubscribed :?

Well, finally it's all over! Phew...what a long and horrible road.
I ended up appealing for two Wirral schools and am happy to now sign off with a positive result for my DS. Thanks to all for your input onto this site, at times I felt you were my only friends! :D
