DD due to start Wirral Grammar School for Girls on wednesday. Wonder if anyone can answer these last minute questions:-

(1) Do they have to bring in all the P.E. kit on the 1st day? (to put in locker etc)

(2) Is swimming on offer/compulsory? (DD hopes not as she's not keen!)

(3) How are musical instrument lessons allocated? (DD would like to learn an instrument but not sure which yet).

Also best of luck to all our children in this new and exciting chapter of their lives!

My DD is taking her PE kit in on Wed. I don't suppose they will actually need it though. If it's anything like my DS's first day last year they had them sitting tests rather than doing actual lessons.

No mention of swimming, but I don't know if it's in the KS3 curriculum so it may be optional if/when it comes up. I was talked into buying a new swimming bag 'in case'!

If I remember right, they sent out a form about music lessons in the first batch of paperwork, and there was a music woman at the open evening stationed by the piano who people could go to speak to. We filled in the form but haven't heard anything from it.

My DD is quite apprehensive now about the start of term. It's such a big change for them all. Hope it goes well for everyone.

Thanks Wallasey.
So you already have a daughter there? What sort of tests do they do?
I think I missed out on the music lady by the piano. What was the form about?
I hope I haven't ruined her chance of learning an instrument of her choice.

My DD is sort of looking forward to it all now. Just hope it lives up to her expectations and that she makes some new friends easily as she only one of 3 from her school going.
Will try not to show her any of my anxiety though.....

No my DD is starting there this Wed like yours. My DS started at Mossands this time last year. I was only guessing that they might also get tested on the first day as I believe they do these tests everywhere at the start of year 7 to provide some kind of baseline from which to predict future grades. My DS wasn't very forthcoming as to the format of the tests, just that he had to sit in the hall in formal rows!

There are just two girls going from our primary school to Wirral Girls, although my DD knows a couple more from her drama club. She has been looking forward to going for ages, but now when it's imminent she would rather like to go back to primary school!

The music form asked if the child already plays an instrument and would like to continue, or whether she is interested in something new. I think it came out with the first telephone directory size collection of letters. We missed the piano woman too, but I'm hoping more will happen when they are actually there.
