Help with rank order - lieutenant, sergeant etc

Please can someone clarify the order of rank from:
Lieutenant, Sergeant, Colonel, Corporal and Major?
This questions about which is in the middle has come up twice in our practice papers.

Which area/school are you applying for? This type of question is not from the stable of NFER/Multiple Choice

Sounds like a Standard Susan Daughtry, I recognise it and we mistakenly started with her standard type books.

I am sure that I recognise that question, and I am inclined to agree with Tolstoy.
Not likely to be a real 11+ question, IMHO.

it sounds like one we were set - mackerel, herring, sprat, minnow and something else piscine. Well, per-lease! just about all of them, in the dictionary, said "small fish". There's intelligence ... and then there's just ancient 11+ questions!

Yes, it is a Susan Daughtrey question, the technique books and graded tests [5 in each book] are helpful for areas still using standard form.

Oh great.
So for DS2 (Reading Exam) I teach him the names of fishes and for DD (Kendrick) I have to teach her the sizes as well.
Sadly on my desk I have some index cards where I record families of words as they pop up, for example hand tools, religious buildings and people, ranks!, obscure colours, trees, flowers, fish, writing tools, boats, transport parking areas, landscape types, units of time, garden tools, building trades, fasteners, etc. Would any one like to add a few more.
