Hi Can anyone help with this question please?

clash [ cash ] coach

team [????] scoff

The answer choices are fast, coat, sofa, foam, fame

Working through it, we thought:

Letter 1 - t, s or f so coat is ruled out
Letter 2 - a or o
Letter 3 - m
Letter 4 - f

Can anyone advise please? Many thanks

It has to be sofa ! In fact it has to start with S .

Edit . Not sure why the last letter doesn't follow the rule though .

I think the answer is foam

Letter 1. t, s or f
Letter 2 a or o
Letter 3 ??
Letter 4 m or f

If you choose m as the last letter of the new word, it means that the third letter needs to be either the second last letter of team or the last letter of scoff, which makes it either a or f, therefore the only answer can be foam.

Very difficult question, though

I was just working out the code and I came up with the same answer 'foam'

I have never seen one like this before - where you can count from the end and get a different answer when the given words are not the same length. I always thought you had to work from left to right.

Dear Pushkin

Occasionally an author will use clusters of letters.

In this case CA comes from coach 3rd and 4 letters reversed.

Giving FO from scoff

SH comes from the last 2 letters of clash making AM from team

FO and AM make FOAM

Surely that is a very difficult question, though ? Us parents are struggling, what must the poor children be thinking?

It is always best to use the tried and tested rule first, regardless of the numbers of letters. The majority of the time it will work.

If not the child needs to think of other methods as above.
