hi there
right i am stuck on these ones if someone could explain;
1) there are 4 words and three codes
words: skin risk work oven
codes: 3846 5438 7126
using the same code, convert the word or number below
SNORE (_____).

2)find the missing number if;
(29 {65} 32) (31 {83} 48
(55 {__} 17).
that's it for the moment so any suggestions. yeap it is from IPS 20 further test papers TEST PAPER 3

1) With the 1st one, you've obviously got to work out which 4 number code corresponds to which 4 letter word, but one of the number codes is missing. Once you've worked them out, you know the value of each letter.

So... skin risk work oven

3846 5438 7126

Well, 2 of the numbers both end in '6' and there's two pairs of words ending the same, so you have to try them out.

RISK and WORK both also have an R in them, but 3846 and 7126 don't have any other same numbers other than 6, so it can't be that pair.

So 3846 and 7126 must be for SKIN and OVEN.
RISK has 3 letters the same as SKIN, so it makes sense that 3846 be SKIN and then RISK would be 5438, leaving OVEN as 7126 and WORK as the unknown code.

Now you can work out that S=3, N=6, O=7, R=5, E=2, so the answer is 36752.

I hope this is right and hope it helps. I tend to use trial and error method but there may be a quicker and easier way if anyone knows?

2) With the second one, I believe the missing number is 76.

(29 (65) 32) If you add 29+32 = 61, so you have to add 4 to make 65.
(31 (83) 48) If you add 31+48 = 79, so you have to add 4 to make 83.

(55 ( ) 17) So, If you add 55+17 = 72, and then add 4, you get 76.
