Help with Walsh VR, Paper 6, Question 36

Can anyone help with the following please? It's a question where we have to find the next in the series.
2 4 6 12 14 [ ]
The answer is 28.
I can see 2 doubled is 4, 6 doubled is 12, and 14 doubled is 28. That's as far as I seem to get. But if that's the rule, then where did the 6 and 14 come from?
Any help appreciated.
