Vocabulary

Post by chrissiewilliams »

Hi,

My daughter will be sitting the exam next year. She is doing lots of practise papers and is doing well however i am worried that her vocabulary will be a problem. I have read some of the questions and i know some of the words she wont have even heard of. She reads a lot. What else can i do?

Dear ChrissieWilliams

Firstly welcome to the forum.

Which area or school are you applying for?

Take a look at the following link which may be of some help regarding vocabularly.

If you use the search facility, located in the top right hand side of your screen, just below "shop" you will be able to find some more threads.

The best thing to do is to read together. Regularly ask them about tricky words (you can do this as you go or at the end of the chapter), or if you want to keep the flow going, immediately after the tricky word also use an easier word with a similar meaning. It is much easier to absorb vocab than to learn it. My DS1 is an avid and strong reader (with a reading age well in advance of his actual age), but we both enjoy the closeness of sharing a book together most days. That means that reading Alex Rider or Harry Potter etc. counts as revision - a win win.
