When my DS looked at that one he got the right answer but his reasoning was that duck and chicken are birds while the others are mammals.

Yes, most of my children find the answer to this question in same way as its the first of Type B they see.
I go on to explain that the 2 odd are not necessarily related, they could be table and planet or mother and carpets.
I therefore always get my children to find the 3 that mean the same or are related 1st.

Thank you for that Patricia - I hadn't realised that the two odd ones out might not be related to each other. I'll remember to pass that on next time we look at this type! But I suppose his reasoning could still be correct if he notices it as three are mammals and two are not.... luckily one of the isn't crocodile as I'm not sure if it would occur to him to look for a simple explanation like number of legs!
