Which statement is true ?

On our last school trip, nobody was allowed to bring more than £20 pocket money.

Kyle bought twice as much money as George, but 10% less than Nilanni.
George has £5 more than Alex, who had £3 more than Tharani.
Nilanni bought the maximum amount

A. Tharanni bought the most money

B. Kyle brought £19

C. George brough £19

D. Alex brought £4

E. Tharanni brought £3

DC thinks answer is option D and has following logic.

Option A is elimated as Tharani has less than even Alex.
No body is allowed to bring more than £20. So option B is eliminated.
George had less than Kyle. So option C is eliminated.
Working back, option E is eliminated. as 3+3+5=11*2=22 where-as 20 is max.

So left with option D and the proof is in working back.

Alex 4 which could be 3+1
George which is 4+5=9
Kyle which is 9*2=18 which is 90% of £20 Nilanni could bring and we know Nilanni brought the maximum amount.

Hope I have been able to correctly describe DC logic and that this is the correct answer.

Simply work out methodically what each child has from the details given:

1. Nilanni brought the maximum, so she has £20.

2. Kyle has 10% less than Nilanni, so she has 90% of £20, which works out at £18.

3. Kyle has 2x as much as George, so George must have £18/2, which is £9.

4. George has £5 more than Alex, so Alex must have £9-£5 = £4.

5. Alex has £3 more than Tharani, so Tharani must have £1.

Hence, the answer is D! Good luck!

They are far more straightforwad than they seem.

The key to 95% of Type Z questions is to look for the fact. In this case it was "Nilanni brought the maximum", so she has £20. Everything else can be deduced from that.

Children must get used to the idea of sifting through all the verbiage, e.g.:

burbleburbleburbleburbleburbleburbleburbleburbleburbleburbleburble Susan had 3 dogs burbleburbleburbleburbleburbleburbleburbleburbleburble

Home in on that and work from there.

Very occasionally all the information is relative, e.g. above/below, taller/shorter, and a diagram is always needed to try to work those questions out.
