Mohammed Cassius Charlotte David Emily

Recorder (Yr5) Y Y Y Y Y

Violin (Yr6) Y Y N N Y

Piano Y N N Y N

Flute N N Y N N

If you read the question and fill in the table accordingly Y=Yes , N=No, you will see that Mohammed plays three instruments and the rest 2. Mohammed, Cassius and Emily are in Year 6!

OOPS! Sorry, but my table I drew up has collapsed on submitting the answer. Just align my Y and N up with each child. Hope this helps!

My paper says:

M, Cass, Char, D and E have been at ..M Primary School since they were 5 ( not year 5).
All DC in Year 5 learn Recorder
All DC inYear 6 learn violin
M and D learn piano lessons outside school
Only D and Char are in Year 5
It does not tell me what year the rest are in, other than they have been at the school since they were 5.
Many thanks for any help!

As Year 5 and Year 6 instruments are being discussed in the question, and as it is stated that David and Charlotte are in year 5, then one must assume that the other students are in Year 6!

But for all type Z we are told we must not make any assumptions unless we are specifically told. For example in Walsh and BS. My daughter points this out! GL can't have it both ways in this respect.

OK, as Year 5 and Year 6 instruments are being discussed in the question, and as it is stated that David and Charlotte are in year 5, then the other students are in Year 6. SIMPLE!!!

Iwas puzzled as well and my daughter too.
She pointed the same that it isnt clear if others are in year 6 or any other class.
So I am confused as well that is it assumption that rest are in year 6 or they want us to interpret it on purpose.
Thanks

I have just googled this question because I don't see how the answer is Mohammed without making a huge assumption that he is in year 6.

Mohammed - piano
David - piano, recorder
Charlotte - flute, recorder
Cassius and Emily - no information other than they are not in year 5.

We aren't told what year the children are in apart from David and Charlotte, so we don't know if Mohammed is in year 4 and hasn't yet learnt recorder or violin or whether he is in year 6 and can play violin and recorder for example.
