Need help with the question

Post by rochika_agrawal »

Dominic, Elsa, Ben, Maddy and Arif have
a science test.
There are ten questions.
The answers are either right or wrong.
Dominic left out three questions.
Ben and Arif got the same mark.
Elsa got all the even numbered questions
correct.
Maddy got half Ben,s mark.

If these statements are true, only one of
the sentences below cannot be true.
Which one?

A Maddy did not have the lowest mark.
B Arif got 9.
C Dominic got less than Elsa.
D Ben got full marks.
E Elsa got the highest mark.

Please tell me how the answer is B.

I dislike this question with a vengeance because it contains double negatives.

The critical word is "cannot":

Maddy got half Ben's mark, and Ben scored the same as Arif.

We are told that answers are either right or wrong, which implies that there are no half marks.

Thus, Maddy score was any of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5.

Ben and Arif therefore scored any of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.

Arif therefore could not have got 9 and the answer is B.
