Hi, struggling to explain the rule to DD for the following one:

Type 8 VR complete the third pair of words so they follow the same pattern as the first two pair of words

Item:

stagger stank / swagger swank / dagger ?

The correct answer is dank. However, DD wrote dagnk, which she knew was wrong. However, she was trying to
find the rule and followed SD's technique to number the letters to see patterns. From here she found the rule for the first two pairs to be "take the first, second and third letters i.e. sta and swa in the two examples, then add nk". This rule did indeed lead to stank and swank. But then obviously applying it to dagger gives dagnk instead of dank. So following the recommended technique led to confusion!

Is it that the rule of thumb here is that if following the technique gives an answer you can see is wrong - there must be another rule? Presumably here it's take the first syllable then add nk?

Clarification much appreciated

Given that the words stagger / swagger / dagger are of different length, numbering the letters probably isn't an appropriate technique here. Looking for common factors - 1st word ends in "agger" 2nd in "ank" but each pair starts the same (1st pair "st", 2nd pair "sw", 3rd by implication "d") would be a better way of approaching it.

In this example I'd find numbering the letters a slow and cumbersome method - but it would work I suppose if you numbered backwards instead of forwards.

Ahh! That makes much more sense! Thank you for taking the time to explain Okanagon, much appreciated!
