I have been racking my brains on these two questions and just cannot see the solutions at all. Please can someone help explain?

The three numbers in each group are related in the same way. Find the number which completes the last group

Q41

(4 [12] 36) (2 [6] 18) (5 [?] 45)

The answer is 15

Q43

(3 [5] 16) (4 [10] 28) (5 [?] 10)

The answer is 0

Any ideas how I explain these to my dd and also are there are strategies in approaching this type of question?

Thankyou :-)

You just need to look for a formula which works for both of the given examples and apply it to the third one.

Q41 The number in the middle is 3 times the one on the left, and 1/3 of the one on the right

Q42 The number in the middle is 1/2 of the number on the right, less the number on the left.

Thanks so much for prompt reply. It seems obvious now but I was looking at it for so long too! :oops:

Hiya, for Q41, my daughter worked it out using 2 methods.

4x3=12, then 12x3=36

2x3=6, then 6x3=18, which must mean then that 5x3=15, then 15x3=45.

Other method she used is multiply the number of the left by 6 then subtract the answer from the number on the right.

Q43

Half the number on the right, then take away the number on the left.
