Q. find a word that goes equally well with both set of words....

(garbage, rubbish) (boat, ship)

How about junk? It is a flat bottomed sailing vessel as well as trash.

Does the word have to join the words in brackets?

need to find a word that can be another word for the words in the brackets... so junk can mean garbage-rubbish and boat and ship
