The only word that fits is "Isles" has to start with a vowel - not a great question

'Islet' fits too and is grammatically more correct than isle, though it still makes little sense.
Perhaps for someone whose pancreas is giving them problems. :?

I think there's an italics fail in the OP, Ken, the "i"s are a red herring and the question is in fact as follows: The sle was not comfortable.

Assuming it is only one missing letter we are looking for, that would give the possibility of: The sled was not comfortable?

Oh really? OK I was wondering about ASLEF. 'Sled' - now there is a word in common use for the average 10 year old, eh? Up there with 'muffler' and 'galoshes'.

This sounds a bit like some of the good old NFER papers - I remember one word that none of us could work out was FOLDS (as in Folds of someone's dress)
