I found associating numbers with the letters useful. Firstly we had the complete alphabet with the associated number above it eg

1 2 3 4 5 ......
a b c d e .......

and then put numbers above the problem (so it became more mathematical/logically to understand). For example;

CG is to ED
BW is to D_

becomes;

3 7 5 4
C G is to E D

2 23 4 ?
B W is to D _

In reality, your dd will not have the time to do this in the exam, but we managed to use this as a technique to build up confidence and technique. We then slowly reduced the use of numbers to the stage where it was only used where necessary, allowing our dd to get to the right speed to complete the sections efficiently.

Hope this helps and good luck :)
