17(32)2 , 13(36)3, 9(?)4
answer 34

I recognise this question from Bucks NFER practice paper 1, the answer is 32 [that is the answer on the my answer sheet too]

17 x 2 = 34 – 2 = 32
13 x 3 = 39 – 3 = 36
9 x 4 = 36 – 4 = 32

Multiplying numbers outside the brackets subtracting number on the right.

15(32)2, 14(30)2 ,12(?}4

This question has been discussed before…

15 x 2 = 30 + 2 = 32
14 x 2 = 28 + 2 = 30
12 x 4 = 48 + 4 = 52

Multiplying numbers outside the brackets, adding number on the right.

OR

Double 15 plus 2 = 32
Double 14 plus 2 = 30
Double 12 plus 4 = 28

If the question is multiple choice and only one of the answers is present, then fine. However if it a standard form question, you are at the mercy of the publisher. This question therefore should NOT be presented in a standard form format.

Patricia,thanks for answering the question.
But Susan Daugherty Bright Sparks paper three question 71 multiple choice format,She stated 28 as the answer ,not 52.
She listed both 52 and 28 in the choices which is really confusing. Is this an error from Susan Daugherty?

Dear Zees

My Test 3 q 71 offers the answers, 28 22 20 26 32

52 is not included....

It could be classed as ambiguous if the question was offered in standard form.

hi patricia, first of all a huge thanks to you and all forum users for their wonderful advice especially doing DIY. patricia my son just finished with his 11+ exams and he thinks he has done really really well. taking your advice we did DIY. it was bit challenging but very interesting . we did it step by step as you adviced he didn't feel any pressure and was looking forward to take these tests. he said first one was really easy but second one was extremely easy and very basic. so a very very big thanks goes to you from all of us. now he said he is looking forward to have his results i will let you know whatever result is.
Right now regarding the above question. i just checked his SD paper3 answer sheet (already done one). you are right choices are 28 22 20 26 32 and my son marked 28. i tried to work it out and it comes to 52 so i went outside to check with him (he playing football) and he worked it out 28 by following method:
15+2x2-2=32
14+2x2-2=30
12+4x2-4=28
i couldn't think of this way may be it is wrong so sorry in advance. if it is right we would like to know from which paper the second question is?.thanks for reading.
