Can anyone help with the following:

Is there an easy way to solve type 13 problems with "asymmetric" word lengths?

For instance, Q10 on The Tutors 15 minute level 4 paper 15 gives:

(plate [pale] table)
(blank [????] sand)

My "home made" solution to these gave me possible answers of pale, bald, band, bale, pane. The answer sheet allowed band and bald, but the actual answer was band.

The home made solution is obviously wrong ; can anyone explain how to do them?

Thank you ( and sorry if this is really easy! - but nerves and tiredness are kicking in)

Have you looked at this post? The first question in this post discusses the very same issue.

Dear Silveflora

(plate [pale] table)
(blank [????] sand)

The Standard Rule:

P where does it come from = Ist on the left = B
A where does it come from = 3rd on the left = A or 2nd on the right = A
L where does it come from = 2nd on the left = L or 4th on the right = D
E where does it come from = 5th on the left = K or 5th on the right, no 5th letter in sand.

Only possible answer is BALK which is not a given answer. [child would probably not recognise this as a word.]

Therefore use a non standard rule:

P and A come from 1st and 3rd on the left = B and A
L and E come from Last 2 letters on right = N and D

Answer: BAND
