Play Scrabble, Boggle, Upwords. Take a section of the newspaper and get him to find words that he does not know. He can challenge you. Also

Hello EPE
I have found that the best way to teach my son vocab was to make flash cards, and also to read, read, read!
I use flashcard exchange to make my flash cards, and you can share your flashcards with others. If you want to print off the flash cards I have made, PM me and I'll send you the link.
I have got him reading lots of classic stories, such as Charles Dicken's (abridged for his age) and others, (Huck Finn.. Houdini... Alexander the Great... etc.). I also read him the original Grimm and Andersen Tales, with a dictionary close to hand... it's often needed!
We also read History books together (Men and Women Who Changed the World) and when we come across words we dont know, I write them down and make a crossword out of them, using Crossword Weaver.

Hi Elevenplusparent
There is a free download on the site written by The Tutors. All the words contained in the NFER practice papers are included in it. Also The Tutors have written a Vocabulary Builder CD, there is a free demo in the interactive CDs section.

Mike
