need help

Post by Linda »

hello every1

I' ve got a question that i can't solve either my son.

IPS TYPE Z
Duncan is twice as old as Sebastian will be next year. Isabella is 8, Sebastian is three years older than Isabella was last year.

using this information to answer the following question.

how many years old is Duncan? ____________years old

I think that if Isabella is 8, Sebastian will be 10 last year (11 this year). So Duncan will be twice as old as Sebastian (11) next year(12). In this case Duncan will be 23 years old.

But the answer sheet only have: 12, 14, 15, 16 and 18

So... Whats the right answer, and what is the right way to solve this question????

Dear Linda

The answer is 22.

This is a known mistake by IPS. Take a look at this old thread.

I always find out what the ages are NOW.

Isabella = 8 NOW
Sebastian = 10 NOW [ Isabella was 7 last year, plus 3 = 10]
Duncan = 22 [ Sebastian will be 11 next year, double 11 = 22 ]
