Not bad for school taking pride in being highly academic and I think, there are enough opportunities for every one in sports at their level. Not every one is capable of being in School team.

Not saying that there is anything wrong with the overall sports provision, and obviously since you are not paying for it the school's sports are exceptional compared with your average state school.

It's easy to make anything look good, and any website can paint a fine picture and use a few stats or a bit of history - like Alec Stewart played there nearly 40 years ago etc.

But the fact is that the school is not the greatest achiever at sport for obvious reasons, and if the head of sport tells you that you would have to get used to losing most of the time then who am I to disagree.

Well, what I want to emphasize that there are enough sports opportunities and pupil there are fully supported. No one there is selected on sports ability so winning all the times is perhaps not expected there either. Also sports is not funded at Tiffin as much as indies which perhaps has also support from wealthier parents.

I feel like an interloper as I don't have a child at Tiffin but I think I know what J50 means about getting used to losing. Any state school that plays rugby is predominantly going to be playing against independent schools. Many of the boys at indies will have played since prep school whereas most boys at Tiffin will never have played before starting secondary. That's very difficult to compete with.

If you look at the schools sport website you will see for example that the Tiffin U12A rugby team has played 11 matches this season and won only 2. The 2 wins were against state schools and they didn't beat any independent school the whole season. Undoubtedly the position improves as you go up the school with more coaching, but the results are still very much in the independent schools favour.

This doesn't mean that the sports provision at Tiffin isn't good, it just means that you are competing against schools with specialist teaching provision and children who have been playing significantly longer. (The situation is very similar at Wallington where rugby is the dominant sport as well.)

Indeed.

Not only that but the intake is based purely academically, and nothing to do with being an all rounder or sportsman. Schools like Hampton/Charterhouse that will give out up to 100% scholarship or bursary to secure the services of a highly rated sportsboy are always going to be able to stay one step ahead in sports.

I think all schools should offer football - several professional footballers were educated at GS.

Absolutely. And is quite economical too compared to some other sports.

No football here in Walsall either but has adapted well to rugby and enjoying playing 1st team and still playing football for a team and for the district outside of school - sorry but a future career and a sound education really cannot be jeopardised for the chance of a game of football... :?

It's a shame that no football at Tiffin. It's the main national sport and people of all sizes have a chance to shine. Time for another campaign?
