11 Plus Exams Forum

i am thinking of purchasing some GL assessment papers for maths practice. for tiffin girls, wallington and non-such exams this 2016. for these particular schools would it be better to practice on the multiple choice papers or the standard format ? and what sort of score would be a useful indicator ? could some please suggest...many thanks !!

Last year ....

SET Stage 1 was multiple choice. Mix of GL with cloze. I would suggest to start with GL multiple choice. I would also suggest that u look at the SAT paper formats. They are also great help. Specially the spelling, grammar and punctuation papers.
Second stage of all these school - Papers are set by the school but are in the format of Standard papers.

I wouldn't just focus on GL maths. You need to do a wide range of papers. I would highly recommend First Past the Post maths books. But make sure your DD knows her maths topics very well before attempting them as they can be challenging.

Do lots of multiple choice practice as well as standard because the 1st stage is key.

I would also focus on past papers of independant schools too.
I feel the format for exams are changing constantly and I dint believe there's too much difference between independant and grammar school entrance tests.

Hm... it's very easy to get side tracked and make your life a nightmare.... IMHO.... You should stick to the SAT Math syllabus and aim to be doing Level 5 and 6 questions.

Just make sure you have covered 100% of what will be taught in Y6 BEFORE the TGS tests.

I believe just sticking with one paper format is very dangerous whether it be GL or SATs papers. It's not just about covering the key stage 2 syllabus to level 5/6 but it is also being able to answer questions on that syllabus which have been asked in multiple different ways. You can only get that experience through doing a variety of papers. It doesn't mean doing every single paper under the sun, it's about exposing them to different question types - particularly for maths.

Having gone through the 11 plus with 3 children and the latter 2 children over the last 2 years - the maths was definitely tricky. Ultimately, it's your choice and you've got to do what works for you and your DD.
