Re: Sutton mocks B results are out
Thank you @tiffinboys
I have few further questions.
Do not want to add further confusion on this thread, thus shall post a new thread.

Hi
What is the Sutton mocks?
Also, are the selection tests for the all grammar in Sutton from the same exam board? Is it a CEM test?
Thanks

Re: Sutton mocks B results are out
Sutton mocks are mock tests conducted by Sutton Grammar School's PTA.
More information here:

Very useful exam preparation mocks.
Sutton SET are prepared by the schools. Officially, it is not confirmed who prepares the test, but format in not CEM so far. But practising CEM as well as GL and other practice papers commercially available helps.

Thanks Tiffinboys.
I'm confused, are the Sutton 11+ tests CEM or GL?
Thanks

Neither, they're written by the schools.

Thanks for the reply Ladymuck.
I've bought around £300 worth of books for the CEM tests (we were planning to move to Buckinghamshire). Think I'll use these books with him.

Are you planning on having your child sit for Sutton?
In which case, as well as working on multiple choice for the first round, do also make sure that you cover the 2nd round material as well.
The maths in round 1 is probably closer to a GL test. With the English, CEM may be better as it has included multiple comprehensions and cloze, and is very time pressured.

Yes my son may sit the Sutton 11+. He's going to be in Year 5 in September so I have a year to work with him.
Thanks for the info, it's all very useful. I thought that we were moving house so bought all the CEM for the Bucks 11+ but now it looks like we aren't moving there at all. I'm hoping that I can still use the CEM books for the Sutton 12+ prep.

What is the CEM material that you're using exactly? It is too early IMO to be doing papers.
For year 5, the priority is filling the gaps, especially in terms of maths as he will need to know the full KS2 syllabus. I would use the Bond "how to do 11+ maths" book for this, as it will help you identify the gaps in each topic. You could also talk to his year 5 teacher who may be willing to give you an idea of how far they will go through the syllabus this year - some schools cover up to level 6 in year 5 and spend year 6 consolidating, others leave new topics for year 6 (which will be too late for you), and some may have a number of less able students and spend more time in consolidating earlier material. Does the school have pupils who pass the Sutton grammars in earlier years?
For English, then vocabulary is key, and here I suspect your CEM material may be more helpful. Learning the spellings, meanings, synonyms and antonyms of words is key this year in order to pass the first round. Also practising writing in a variety of styles (balanced, argument, letter, diary, newspaper report etc) is important, as ultimately many boys score very highly in maths, and places seem to get awarded according to the strength of the second round English paper.
